The group that became to be know as the PGI Green Thumbs started as a small group of friends with a love of gardening working in History Park.. After 12 years of working in History Park we felt that a new canvas was needed. At a meeting in late 2011 it was suggested that perhaps we could develop Nature Park at the corner of Bal Harbor and Aqui Esta. At that time the park was home to a few oak trees and a field of grass. We approached the city with an offer to develop and maintain Nature Park. In January of 2012 we reached an agreement with the City of Punta Gorda to landscape and maintain the park. We operate with guidance of the Urban Design Department. In 2013 we incorporated under the name of the PGI Green Thumbs and received our 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.
The Nature Park is a 24-acre park located at the corner of Bal Harbor and Aqui Esta in Punta Gorda Isles, a large residential subdivision within the City of Punta Gorda, Florida. This area was originally purchased by the City of Punta Gorda in 1994 using Florida Forever Funds from the Florida Communities Trust program. The park and adjoining wetlands is to be operated in perpetuity as a natural conservation area for public outdoor recreation.
