Thanks to a grant awarded by the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program, the wetlands project was brought to fruition. Our responsibility was to provide time and effort by selecting, locating, planting, and maintaining all the native plants in the wetlands. With the help of Urban Design City staff, we have been able to establish Florida native and Florida friendly gardens for Phase 1. The wetlands project and developed gardens enhance the beautification of the Nature Park and encourages those living in our community and visitors to explore the Nature Preserve and Wetlands area.
The PGI Green Thumbs also have a close partnership with the City of Punta Gorda. Urban Design staff work closely in planning meetings to keep park development within the guidelines of the Florida Communities Trust program.
PGI Green Thumbs has partnered with Charlotte County Master Gardeners.
Florida Master Gardeners are University of Florida-trained volunteer teachers. Master Gardeners educate and provide research-based information to Floridians about gardening, America's most popular pastime. Their information about planning and maintaining urban, suburban, and rural landscapes always emphasizes environmental stewardship.
The Punta Gorda Isles Cvic Association was instrumental in the launch of Nature Park. A grant in 2012 allowed us to begin construction. Initial projects were the installation of water lines, the replanting of the sign bed as well the design and construction of the first two beds.
